This book was about two boys, Reuven Malter and Danny Saunders, that come form different types of Jewish religions, Reuven is a traditional orthodox Jew and Danny is a Hasidic Jew, who come from to different schools and religions. In the beginning we find out that both boys play baseball, and their teams are worst enemies. They end up playing each other, and Reuven and Danny's teams are playing each other for the first time. As Reuven is pitching the ball, Danny comes up to bat and hits Reuven right in the eye and breaks his glasses, at the end of the game Mr. Galanter his coach takes him to the hospital and when Reuven gets there he passes out and they have to do an emergency surgery on his eye. When he wakes up he finds his father David Malter standing over his bed, he told his son that there was concern that he might not be able to see out of his bad eye if he starts using it to soon. The next day Danny came to the hospital to say he was sorry and Reuven blew him off. So the next day when Danny came back to visit Reuven apologized for his behavior, and their friendship begun. Danny was sneaking behind his father and going to the library and checking out books. His father followed his religion very closely and his oldest son (Danny) had to become the Hasidic dynasty. Danny does not want to become his father. Reb Saunders Danny's father and Reuven and Danny often have long conversations about the Torah and how Reb Saunders sermon that morning, while talking about his sermons he says, “We are commanded to study His Torah! We are commanded to sit in the light of the Presence! It is for this that we were created!”( Reb Isaac Saunders, ch. 7) this quotation shows how committed he was to his Torah. As there friendship grows so does their faith in each other. then Reuven's father has a heart attack and Reuven moves in with Danny until his father gets better. soon his father starts giving anti-Zionist speeches, Danny and his father do not agree and Danny’s father forbids Danny to speak to him. Danny and Reuven end up going to the same collage and are in the same class. the professor seems to not like Reuven as much as Danny. he always calls on Danny but never on Reuven. Reuven is determined that he is saving the most challenging question for him and he is determined to be able to answer it! he was right and he did, and the professor was blown away by his answer. the professor from then on called on him a lot more. David Malter got to old to keep giving his anti- Zionist speeches and as soon as he stopped giving his speeches Danny came up to Reuven and asked if he could tutor him in math. soon after the friendship begun again, Danny invited Reuven over to his house and when Reuven came over the father talked to Danny through Reuven. he told Danny that he knew he did not want to be involved in the Hasidic Dynasty and he was ok with that. Danny then went to Columbia collage in Manhattan New York. their friendship never really ended , they still stayed in touch when they went their separate ways. Danny Raised his son in silence the way he was raised so he would not forget his religion.
one should believe that the reason that this book is on the outstanding book list is because it is one of the best books I have ever read, it easily grabs your attention right away. “But the eye that blinks, that is something. A span of life is nothing. But the man who lives that span, he is something….” ( David Malter, ch. 13) he says this to his son as his live span is coming to an end. he try’s to teach his son that your live span is nothing unless you do something with you life. one should believe that this quote is something you could remember for your life. the book the chosen is a book about friendship, never giving up, and finding you place in this world. “[My father] taught me with silence. . .to look into myself, to find my own strength, to walk around inside myself in company with my soul. . . . One learns of the pain of others by suffering one’s own pain … by turning inside oneself. . . . It makes us aware of how frail and tiny we are and of how much we must depend upon the Master of the Universe.” ( Danny Saunders, ch. 18). this book is on the outstanding book list because it has good philosophical meaning that you can apply to your own life, you can relate to struggles of Reuven and Danny when they are becoming friends, although I am sure you did not grow up in the same environment as them you are still able to put yourself in their shoes, and in doing that the author keeps your attention through out the book. Reuven and David Malter show respect to Reb Isaac and Danny Saunders even though Reb Saunders is raising Danny in a way that they do not agree with, this book shows how you need to be open to other people and their religions and how they are being raised, it also shows that you should not judge people because they are different then you.
I would recommend this book to people because it is a exellent book that has a lot of strong messages that you can relate to your own life. It was a story of friendship and finding yourself. I am certian that everyone will love this book no matter what age or gender you are! It is one of those books that as soon as you pick it up you will not be able to set it down. So go check out this book and let me know what you think when you are done. Enjoy!!
